Posted on Published: January 31, 2023  - Last updated: April 1, 2023

Man wearing tacky tourist costumes including tshirt, camera, and suitcase.

Tacky tourist costumes never fail to make people giggle. They’re the kind of outfits that scream, “I’m on vacation, baby!” While most actual tourists don’t dress this way, tourist costumes can be a fun costume idea for Halloween or school spirit days.

In this article, you’ll learn how to make a tacky tourist costume using stuff you already have! By starting with base layers , adding tourist accessories , and practicing a few silly tourist behaviors you’ll be ready to turn heads and win costume contests. I’ll even show you how to ham up your tacky tourist costume by choosing from a list of tourist types (like a travel influencer couples costume, or senior bus tour group costume) and rocking the look.

School spirit. Some high schools (especially in tourist areas) include tacky tourist day in their school spirit week. It’s a fun way to show your school pride and vent some frustration at all the local tourism. Any maybe you’ll even win “best costume.”

  • Tourist Halloween Costume. Tacky tourist costumes are a classic option for the spookiest day of the year. It’s a great not-scary costume for years when you’re home and not taking a halloween vacation .

Stay cool not cringe: There’s a fine line between a clever tacky tourist costume and a cringe-worthy one. It’s funny to poke fun at genres, ideas, and behaviors, but never at specific groups of people. To show respect towards others, avoid mocking accents, stigmatizing marginalized groups, or wearing a fat suit/padding. Embrace resort-wear and a sunscreen-smeared nose- just make sure you’re doing it with kindness.

What to Wear for Tacky Tourist Day: Outfit Ideas

In this section, I’ll show you how to dress like a tourist with clothes you already have. And, I’ll show you how transforming into a tourist character isn’t just about the clothes – it’s also about the accessories and how you act the part. Follow these simple steps, and channel your inner tacky tourist in no time.

First, choose your base layer clothing:

Start with the basic clothes, then we’ll accessorize. Heres where to start:

  • If you still can’t find one, good alternatives include a polo shirt (masculine look), floral sundresses (femme look), or a T-shirt (think: “I ❤️ New York” or “I went to Hoover Dam and all I got was this damn shirt”).
  • 🩳 Shorts. Pair the shirt with khaki or cargo shorts. If you don’t have these, try using any type of shorts you have in your closet. It’s okay if they don’t match the shirt- the goal is to look tacky!
  • 🧦 Wear white socks with sandals or sneakers. This is a classic tacky tourist look that can be achieved easily with items you already own. Remember- sensible shoes only!
  • 👒 Find a hat to wear on your head. Bucket hats, visors, and sun hats work best but just about any hat can ham up this look. If it’s got a chin strap? Even better!
  • 🌺 Neck wear. If you’re embodying a specific tourist type, copy the neck wear. Hawaiian tourists love leis, while tour groups are often recognized by matching lanyards.

With these basic, you’ve got a solid start for a DIY tacky tourist costume – hopefully without spending any money on clothes. Now, we accessorize!

Next, choose 3-4 accessories

  • 📷 Camera: A camera is a classic tourist accessory. No, don’t use your phone, ham it up by wearing a chunky ol fashioned camera around your neck or using an iPad to take photos .
  • 🗺️ Guidebooks and maps: These can be carried in a fanny pack or backpack, or even folded and tucked into a pocket. For added tackiness, consider highlighting or circling various tourist attractions on the map.
  • 🎒 Backpack or daypack: A backpack or daypack can be used to carry other tacky tourist essentials, such as sunscreen, water bottles, and binoculars. Look for a brightly colored backpack or one with a bold pattern to add to the tackiness.
  • 💵 Money Belt: Tourists often use money belts because they believe it will help prevent pickpocketing (it doesn’t) If you’ve got a money belt handy, overstuff it with folded paper and wear it slightly-poking-out from under your shirt.
  • 😎 Sunglasses: Oversized or brightly colored sunglasses can add a touch of tackiness to any tourist outfit. Look for a pair with a fun shape or design.
  • Fanny pack or waist pouch: A fanny pack or waist pouch is the ultimate tacky tourist accessory. (Doesn’t match your shirt? Even better!)
  • Water bottle: A water bottle is a practical and in-character addition to any tourist costume. Gotta hydrate!
  • Travel pillow: A neck pillow with a tacky pattern or design can add an extra layer of humor to a tacky tourist costume.
  • Binoculars: For tourist costume authenticity, binoculars can be hung from a strap or carried in a pouch hooked on a belt for added authenticity.

Complete your costume by act ing like a tourist:

A bit of performance can make a costume truly memorable! Consider how you can embody the tourist vibe and bring it to life through mannerisms, expressions, and interactions. Here’s some suggestions:

  • Mispronounce Local Words. Speak loudly and ask for directions to a local landmark, while slightly mispronouncing it each time.
  • Point. Point frequently and ask obscure questions about the history of your surroundings.
  • Pose. Make stereotypical tourist poses in front of landmarks, such as standing with your arms wide open and your mouth agape.
  • Take Photos. Take lots of pictures of everything, even things that are not particularly interesting. For extra authenticity, take photos using a full size iPad .
  • Sanitize. Constantly pull hand sanitizer from your purse, fanny pack, or waist pouch and offer it to others.
  • Use a Map. Use a guidebook or map to navigate, but hold it upside down or sideways.
  • Umbrella. Carry a large umbrella on a sunny day or wear a sun visor at night. (Hint, in Seattle , umbrellas always give away the tourists!)
  • Apply Sunscreen. Fill an empty sunscreen bottle with a light lotion and apply it constantly throughout the day with exaggerated vigor.
  • Take lots of selfies or ask strangers to take your photo .
  • Act Weary. Pretend you’re dragging yourself back to the car after a day at a theme park. Complain about your blisters.

Practical Costume Considerations

If you decide to go all out for tacky tourist school spirit day, halloween, or the end-of-season-bash at the resort where you work- good for you! But before you build your costume, there’s one thing you need to consider: comfort.

After all, you’re going to be wearing this costume all day. You don’t want to be hauling around a 4lb DSLR camera around your neck through 6th-period history class! So how do you make sure your tacky tourist get-up is comfortable enough for a full day of learning? Choose comfortable, breathable clothes that fit your body. If you plan to wear the costume all day, avoid heavy props (or plan a way to carry them easily).

DIY Tacky Tourist Costumes: Tips to Make Your Own

Not only is this costume easy to put together with items you likely already have in your closet, but it’s also a chance to be lighthearted about your own cringey tourist behaviors.

In this section, we’ll explore some especially DIY tacky tourist costume ideas that will have your friend keeling over with laughter. From fanny packs to flower leis, here’s how to make your own costume without spending money on a cheap costume:

  • Print your own maps. Remember the print feature on google maps? It still works!
  • Ask your local buy nothing for a broken camera – it’s free to ask!
  • Transform your look with makeup and hair gel. Just choose a style 10 or 20 years out-of-style and you’ll channel your inner tacky tourist.
  • Use makeup you already have . Layer the reddest blush you’ve got for a quintessential tourist sunburn, or apply a pale foundation with streaks to mimick the tourist caked with poorly applied sunscreen.
  • Ham it up. Actions speak louder than… costume elements. Pointing, photo taking, and gawking will “sell” the costume better than any prop.

Specific Tacky Tourist Costume Ideas for Single, Couples, and Groups:

  • Sunburned resort guy: This costume is for the guy (or gal!) who spent a little too much time soaking up the sun on his resort vacation . He’s sporting a bright red sunburn (DIY it with blush or red-facepaint) and beachy clothes. Add in some flip flops and a beach towel and you’ve got a kitchy sun-soaked look. It’s a lighthearted way to poke fun at the realities of vacationing.
  • Honeymooners, RV retirees, or #vanlife couples make inspiration for great tacky tourist couples costumes: This costume is all about embracing the cheesiness of a particular travel style. kitchy souvenirs from a honeymoon , camping gear, or senior-friendly athleisure-wear can round out the particular look. A tourist mom-and-dad duo can coordinate their outfits to match, complete with camera straps and sandals with socks.
  • Seniors’ bus tour group costume: This costume is all about embracing the charm of a senior citizen bus tour. Think Bermuda shorts, floral shirts, and comfy sneakers. Add in some visors, lanyards and binoculars and you’re styling like a group of adventurous retirees. It’s a respectful way to celebrate the particular style of a favorite travel style of retirement golden years.
  • Disney adult costume : This niche tacky tourist costume is a fun excuse to go all out embodying meme-worthy millennial Disney fandom. Pair black leggings with a theme park shirt and the iconic mouse ear hat or headbands. Carry a giant purse and offer people snacks!
  • Tourist couples costume: Instagram Travel Influencer and “Influencer Boyfriend” : Wear whatever the Kardashians are schlepping and act too cool for your surroundings. Pose frequently while directing “Instagram boyfriend” to take photos. Then disengage from everyone to check social media. (PS, that’s not really what it’s like to be a travel influencer !)

What does a tourist actually look like?

Real tourists look ordinary and usually wear comfortable, travel-friendly street clothes. Many tourists research clothing styles in their destinations in advance, precisely to avoid looking like a tourist! Few real tourists embody these tacky tourist outfit ideas, but exaggerating extremes is the fun of a costume!

Whether it’s for school spirit day, Halloween, or just a themed party, a tacky tourist costume is all about embracing the cheesy and over-the-top elements of vacation attire. Just remember to stay comfortable in your clothing choices and avoid mocking specific groups of people. With these tips in mind, you’ll be able to rock your tacky tourist costume with confidence and humor. So go ahead and channel your inner tourist – it’s time to embrace the tackiness!

Dressing like a tourist is easy! A bright Hawaiian shirt is a classic look, but neon prints and souvenir t-shirts are also great shirt options. For bottoms, definitely go with khaki shorts or cargo shorts. Slip into a pair of white crew socks and strap your sandals over them to create an iconic tourist vibe. Don’t forget accessories like fanny packs, leis, straw hats, and multiple cameras to tie your look together!

Things You Should Know

  • Wearing a Hawaiian shirt is a classic way to stand out as a tourist. You could also pick a graphic T-shirt or a shirt with a loud, vibrant print.
  • Go for bottoms like khakis or cargo shorts. For a more tropical vacation vibe, opt for a colorful sarong.
  • Hold your items in a fanny pack and throw on some socks with sandals to complete the look.

Step 1 Slip on a bright Hawaiian shirt.

  • For example, try a shirt with a bright red and purple floral print.
  • If you can find something with neon colors, go with that!
  • A trick with florals is to choose them according to your height--for a petite size person, choose small floral prints; for average height, choose a medium floral print; and for plus size, larger or tall, choose a large floral print.

Step 2 Try a tank top or shirt that promotes a popular vacation spot instead.

  • You could also go with something that promotes a popular company that caters to tourists, like Señor Frog’s or Hard Rock Café.

Step 3 Wear a T-shirt that advertises your high school or college sports team.

  • Bonus points if the name of your hometown is written right on the shirt!

Step 4 Opt for any shirt with a vibrant print.

  • Try an over-sized plaid button-up with short sleeves in the brightest colors you can find.
  • A neon tie-dye top is also a great choice.

Step 5 Wear a swim suit top as outerwear to a costume party.

  • Wrap a sarong around your waist and slip into a pair of flip-flops to complete your outfit.

Step 1 Wear khaki shorts for a classic take on the look.

  • Pair your khaki shorts with an oversized Hawaiian shirt for an iconic tourist look.

Step 2 Put on a pair of high-waisted “mom-style” bottoms instead.

  • Tuck a pink tank top with “Hawaii” scrawled on the front into a pair of mom-style, knee-length khaki shorts and you’re all set!

Step 3 Wear cargo pants if you want to include lots of accessories.

  • You can go with any color, but khaki or tan cargos would be very authentic.
  • Cargo skirts are another option you might prefer. Just be aware that they're not the most flattering style for skirts because their bulky pockets stick out. You'll also need to opt for a top that hits at your waist, you don't want to add bulk by tucking things in.

Step 4 Wrap a colorful sarong around your waist for a tropical vacation vibe.

  • Strap on a second fanny pack for extra oomph.
  • If you can’t get your hands on a fanny pack, an overstuffed backpack will also do the trick. [4] X Research source

Step 2 Wear white crew socks with sandals or loafers.

  • Strap on an old-school camcorder for a retro tourist vibe.
  • Keep one of your cameras in your hands at all times. Photograph everything excessively, of course!

Step 4 Top off your outfit with a huge straw or safari hat.

If you want to dress like a tourist, stick to obvious, flashy clothes that peg you as a foreigner. Go for a short-sleeved button-up shirt with a floral print or a vibrant pattern on it. Or, wear a souvenir t-shirt that promotes the location you’re in, like one that says, “I love New York.” Pair your loud shirt with khaki or beach shorts to go full tourist. If you’re near the beach, wander around in a bikini and sarong. You can also add a tourist accessory, like a fanny pack, a camera around your neck, oversized sunglasses, or a big safari hat, to complete your look. The Tacky Tourist Costume typically consists of various elements designed to capture the essence of a stereotypical tourist. It often includes a combination of mismatched and brightly colored clothing items, oversized accessories, and an assortment of touristy props. The key to a successful Tacky Tourist Costume lies in exaggerating tourist stereotypes and incorporating humorous details.

When assembling a Tacky Tourist Costume, one might start with a vibrant Hawaiian shirt adorned with loud patterns and colors. Pairing this with a pair of high-waisted, knee-length shorts in a clashing print adds to the comedic effect. The costume is often completed with knee-high socks, sandals, or sneakers that showcase the wearer’s distinct lack of fashion coordination.

To accessorize the Tacky Tourist Costume, individuals often opt for oversized sun hats, fanny packs, and cameras with large lenses. These accessories emphasize the tourist’s desire to document every moment while still maintaining an unmistakable sense of tackiness. Additionally, wearing sunglasses, preferably in a garish style, and sporting a lanyard with an oversized ID badge or a collection of keychains adds a playful touch.

Another significant aspect of the Tacky Tourist Costume is the use of props. Travel essentials like maps, guidebooks, and foldable city street plans can be carried around for added authenticity. It’s also common to see tourists clutching selfie sticks or walking around with an inflatable pool float in the shape of a flamingo or a donut.

The Tacky Tourist Costume allows individuals to embrace a carefree and fun-loving spirit. By exaggerating stereotypes and incorporating humorous details, wearers can bring joy and laughter to any occasion. It’s important to remember that this costume is meant to be light-hearted and in good fun, celebrating the enthusiasm and curiosity of tourists while playfully poking fun at their fashion choices and habits.

The Tacky Tourist Costume is a delightful way to express oneself at parties or events that call for a touch of humor. By combining mismatched clothing items, oversized accessories, and an array of touristy props, individuals can embody the spirit of a stereotypical tourist while spreading laughter and enjoyment among fellow partygoers.

How to make a super tacky tourist costume.

Tacky Tourist Costume for Cosplay & Halloween

The tacky tourist style is easy to spotted. These kind of people are likely to wear a bright printed shirt like an Aloha shirt with shorts and a pair of flip-flops with socks. They love wearing any kind of hats they could find as well as sunglasses and applying a lot of sunscreen on their nose to protect themselves from the sun, even when they’re at the place where the sun doesn’t shine.

They’re also obsessed with a giant fanny pack where they can store more sunscreen and a camera which they use to capture every single thing. Do you want to have fun and dress like a tacky tourist? Follow our list down below!

About Tacky Tourist

When we talk about tacky tourists, our thoughts automatically think of a group of people who are soaked in sunscreen, yet super tan, and speak their language so loudly with over-the-top gesture. They also expect other people to speak their language whether they’re in Europe or Asia, or any other parts of the world. Although often causing irritation and sometimes frustration to the locals, the tacky tourists now can also bring about the laughter and smile with their unbelievable naivety and silliness.

Tourist Overview

A tourist is someone who travels to a different location for leisure, recreation, or to experience new cultures and environments. Tourists may travel domestically or internationally and may stay for a short or long period of time.

Tourists often visit popular attractions such as museums, historical sites, natural wonders, and amusement parks. They may also participate in activities such as sightseeing tours, outdoor adventures, and cultural events.

Tourism is a major industry in many parts of the world and can have a significant impact on local economies. Tourists bring in revenue through hotel stays, dining at restaurants, shopping, and participating in various activities.

While tourism can have positive effects on a destination’s economy and culture, it can also have negative impacts such as overcrowding, environmental degradation, and cultural appropriation. Therefore, it is important for tourists to be respectful and mindful of the communities they visit, and to support sustainable and responsible tourism practices.

What a fun article, Sarah. My favourite is the Snow Globe costume but I am not sure if I would personally dress up in it. I might try it on my niece though.

When looking at these photos, I can't stop laughing. This post is fun. Will look back at this post in February, when Carnaval is coming up in the Netherlands! Then it will definitely be useful. Thanks for sharing!

Although I haven't dressed up in years, I do enjoy looking at photos of everyone's costumes! These are all so great! If I was going to dress up this year I would dress up as the new female Dr. Who. She's a world traveler, wouldn't you say?!?!? :)

  • A Brief Guide To Traditional...

A Brief Guide to Traditional Russian Dress

Konstantin Makovsky, Russian Brides Attire, 1884

Russian costume traditions have a long history, and even though many elements have been forgotten over the years or labeled as ‘old style’ and ‘unattractive’, a few elements have managed to spring back to life. Dolce&Gabbana reminded the world several years ago about Byzantine fashion roots and showed that it can actually be sexy. Following the famous fashion mogul example, we are looking at the traditional Russian dress, rooted deeply in Byzantine. We’re going to see if we can find attractive elements that have potential to inspire our twenty-first century looks.

There isn’t an exact date when the traditional Russian costume was born, although it is logical to suppose that its birth coincided with the same era the country was established, around the tenth and twelfth centuries. There are records indicating that northern and southern fashions differed quite a lot in style and decoration, although the core clothes stayed pretty similar. All Russian clothing styles existed in ‘everyday’ and ‘special occasion’ variants, differing in materials, colors and decorations used. The common element was multiple layers of fabrics.

The traditional Russian costume used to be a part of the country’s history up until the beginning of the eighteenth century, when Peter the Great proclaimed the Russian dress to be ‘peasant and non progressive’. He introduced a law that fined anyone who entered the city in traditional national clothes, as well as anyone with a beard . The citizens, aristocracy, merchants and other influential society members switched to European dress, while traditional Russian clothes were half-forgotten and worn only in the countryside and among members of religious institutions.

Nowadays, traditional Russian dress can only be seen worn by Church officials and during some ethnic holidays . Many elements are now lost, although there are still several components that became iconic to Russian traditional dress.

Rubakha (oversize shirt)

The basic element of any traditional Russian wardrobe was the rubakha, which could be worn by both men and women. Basically, this is the old style variant of the contemporary shirt. Rubakhas were worn as street clothes among the poor and as home clothes among the rich. The overall look was what is now called ‘oversize’ as it didn’t have any specific silhouette. Depending on the financial status, different materials were used for rubakha manufacturing and tailoring, from cheap linen or cotton to expensive imported silk.

Male rubakha, beginning of XX century

Sarafan (long dress)

The main part of the female wardrobe was the sarafan. A long dress, which was often worn on top of a rubakha, that formed the ‘everyday’ and ‘special occasion’ outfit. The most common colors for sarafans were red, light or deep blue, wine and white. Sarafan dresses were often decorated with intricate embroidery.

Young Russian peasant women in front of traditional wooden house.

Decorations for the head and hair were also a part of the common wardrobe. In the case of women, the way the hair was arranged could tell a lot about civil status: young women could show off their hair arranged in a single braid decorated with flowers and other elements. Married women were not allowed to show their hair in public, so they covered their head with different decorations. One of the most iconic and intricately decorated examples of this was the kokoshnik.

Shuba (furcoat)

This is probably the only element of Russian traditional costume that has survived over the centuries and is still popular in the country – severe climate conditions are the reason. The shuba, a Russian word for fur coat, was an inevitable part of both male and female wardrobes. Back in the day, the technique of assembling fur coats was different: the fur was left on the inside of the coat, while the outside was decorated with bright colourful textiles. Nowadays, the shuba design has evolved to match modern fashions, but it still serves its primary purpose: keeping Russians warm during long and cold winters.

Andrei Ryabushkin, Moscow Girl of XVII century, 1903

Kaftan (coat)

The word ‘kaftan’ came to Russia from the Middle East, but this element of clothing became so integral to Russian wardrobes that it was perceived as being local. Usually made using expensive textiles with lots of embroidery and adornments, kaftans were analogous to today’s coats and were worn on top of other clothing.

15 Top-Rated Tourist Attractions & Things to Do in Moscow

Written by Diana Bocco Updated Dec 23, 2023

Moscow is one of Europe's most enigmatic destinations, home to a fascinating history and colorful, awe-inspiring architecture you won't find anywhere else in the world. Moscow might be one of the most populous cities in the world with over 11 million inhabitants, but this hasn't changed its strong cultural and social traditions.

Walk the cobblestone streets of the Red Square or the banks of the Moskva River early in the morning, and it's hard to tell what century you're in.

Tsarist architecture, must-see churches, and glamorous shopping opportunities blend together for a visual experience you won't forget. For ideas on what to see and do while visiting Russia, here's our list of top tourist attractions in Moscow.

Marvel at the Size of the Kremlin

Catch a performance at the bolshoi theatre, shop at the luxurious gum, make your way into lenin's mausoleum, spend an hour (or three) at red square, discover history at the museum of cosmonautics, ride the stunning moscow metro, explore the moscow state integrated museum-reserve, spend a rainy day at the tretyakov gallery, walk up and down arbat street, stop by the vdnkh all-russian exhibition centre, wander around gorky park, where to stay in moscow for sightseeing, map of tourist attractions & things to do in moscow.

Kremlin

Moscow's most recognizable structure is without a doubt the Kremlin, a 15th-century fortified complex that covers an area of 275,000 square meters surrounded by walls built in the 1400s.

The Grand Kremlin Palace -which has over 700 rooms- was once home to the Tsar family and is now the official residence of the president of the Russian Federation, although most heads of state choose to reside elsewhere.

The massive complex also includes many other buildings, some of which are open to the public and can be visited regularly. Aside from three cathedrals (including one where the Tsars were once crowned) and a number of towers, the Kremlin is also home to the Armory building, a museum holding everything from the royal crown and imperial carriages to the ivory throne of Ivan the Terrible and Fabergé eggs.

Bolshoi Theatre

The Bolshoi Theater is home to the largest and one of the oldest ballet and opera companies in the world . While the theater has undergone several major renovations over the past century-including a recent one in 2011 to restore some of the imperial architectural details-it still retains all of its Neoclassical grandeur.

The Bolshoi Theater you see today opened in 1824, after several older versions burned down. Inside, red velvet, a three-tiered crystal chandelier, and gilt moldings give the place a Byzantine-Renassaince grandiose feel like no other.

Catching a show from the resident ballet and opera troupes is a treat, as the theater often presents a number of classic performances, such as Tchaikovsky's Mazeppa and Rachmaninoff's Francesca da Rimini, both of which originally premiered here.

GUM

Moscow's oldest and most upscale shopping center is an architectural marvel. GUM (short for Glávnyj Universálnyj Magazín or "Main Universal Store") was built in the late 1800s in neo-Russian style to showcase a beautiful mix of a steel skeleton and 20,000 panels of glass forming an arched roof.

This was a unique construction at the time, since the glass had to be strong enough to support the snow-heavy Russian winters. The building is just as impressive outside, with all three levels covered in marble and granite.

While GUM is no longer the largest shopping center in Moscow, it's still by far the most beautiful. Home to brands like Gucci and Manolo Blahnik, this might not be the ideal destination for most budget-conscious visitors, but the beauty of the building itself is worth a visit.

On the third floor, there are also great dining options, including a Soviet-style canteen that serves traditional Russian food, and a stand selling ice cream made by hand using an original 1954 recipe originally approved by the Soviet government.

Lenin's Mausoleum

Lenin's Mausoleum, the final resting place of Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin, occupies a central spot in Red Square. His body has been in the mausoleum since his death in 1924-and although the original plan was for him to be buried after a short period of public display for mourning, the plan quickly changed.

After over 100,000 visited the tomb over a period of six weeks, it was decided that a new sarcophagus and a more permanent display space could actually preserve Lenin's body for much longer than expected-and Lenin's Mausoleum was built.

Over the years, the mausoleum and its marble stairs also became the main spot from where Soviet leaders would watch parades and events happening in Red Square.

Lenin's embalmed body can still be seen today, lying down in a bulletproof glass sarcophagus as if he's sleeping. While a visit to the mausoleum is certainly unusual, it has become a must-do for history buffs looking to understand how Lenin's legacy truly changed the nation. Come ready to wait, though -there are usually lines to get in.

St. Basil's Cathedral on Red Square

All of Moscow's main streets start at Red Square, so it's easy to see why this is considered the heart of the city. A massive space of 330 meters by 70 meters, the square is flanked by the Kremlin, Lenin's Mausoleum, two cathedrals, and the State Historical Museum.

In 1945, a massive Victory Parade was held here to celebrate the defeat of Nazi Germany by the Soviet Armed Forces.

St. Basil's Cathedral , one of the most recognizable buildings on the square, was built in 1555. The unique cathedral has architectural details inspired by Byzantine and Asian design, as well as details that resemble those found in famous mosques. There are nine individual chapels inside the church, all decorated with colorful mural art.

Both the square itself and the Kremlin are recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites . On weekends, there are sometimes stalls selling souvenirs and traditional items here, such as matryoshka (Russian nesting dolls), at the entrance of the square.

Monument to the Conquerors of Space

At one point, Russia and the US were toe-to-toe when it came to space exploration. While that might no longer be the case, the museum's amazing collection-which includes over 85,000 items-is still awe-inspiring.

Main exhibits include the space capsule used by Yuri Gagarin , the first human to travel into outer space; a USSR flag with moon fragments; a Soviet spacesuit; and a rocket propulsion unit from the 1960s. A special two-story hall showcases sections of the Mir space station interior, and there are also models of the first sputniks and a replica miniature spaceship.

English-language tours are available, and there's also a Cinema Hall showing subtitled short films about the history of space exploration programs and the first manned space flight.

The museum is located inside the base of the monument to the Conquerors of Space, which was built almost 20 years before the museum opened.

Komsomolskaya Station on the Moscow metro

Riding the Moscow metro is an experience all in itself, but even just heading underground to walk through the stations is something no visitor should miss. With 223 stations and 12 metro lines crosscutting through Moscow, however, this can be tricky, so visiting at least a few of the most impressive ones is a good start.

Arbatskaya station was designed by a skyscraper architect, so it's no surprise that it features multicolored granite slabs and impressive bronze chandeliers.

Park Kultury station , located next to Gorky Park, is covered in marble and features reliefs of people involved in sports, while Teatralnaya station is decorated with porcelain figures dancing and wearing traditional Russian costumes.

The metro is open between 5:30am and 1:00am but it's very crowded in the early morning and after 4pm, so it's better to visit in the late morning or early afternoon to really appreciate the architecture without the crowds.

Kolomenskoye Estate

The Moscow State Integrated Art and Historical Architectural and Natural Landscape Museum-Reserve is a cultural open-air museum complex comprised of four different historical sites.

The most important site, the Kolomenskoye Estate, was once the summer residence of Tsars as far back as the 14 th century. The complex, which covers almost 300 hectares, is home to fairy-tale wooden palaces; a tent-roof stone church built in the 1500s; a water tower; fort towers and structures; and the 24-room Museum of Wooden Architecture , which includes the restored dining room of Tsar Alexei I.

Beautiful manicured gardens , riverside picnic areas, and a massive collection of both artifacts and structures make this a great destination to help you see what medieval Russia looked like. English-language tours are available, but you're also free to wander the grounds on your own.

Tretyakov Gallery

The largest collection of Russian art in the world sits here, with over 180,000 paintings, sculptures, and religious art dating back to over a millennia ago. The gallery, built using beautiful red and white colors from classical Russian architecture, is located near the Kremlin and it was built in the early 20 th century.

Significant art pieces include the Vladimir Mother of God; a Byzantine icon of the Virgin and child dating back to the 1100s; Andrei Rublev's The Trinity icon from the 15 th century; and several works by Ilya Repin, the most famous realist painter in Russia.

On the grounds of the museum, there is also an 86-meter-tall statue of Peter the Great, as well as a number of Socialist Realism sculptures.

Night view of Arbat Street decorated for the holidays

Moscow's one-kilometer-long pedestrian street has been around since the 15 th century. Originally a trade route in the outskirts of the city, Arbat Street is now very centrally located, home to posh buildings and lots of places to eat and shop.

Beautiful street lamps and two significant statues-one of Princess Turandot (from Puccini's last opera) and one of Soviet-era poet Bulat Okudzhava-adorn the street, which fills up with both locals and tourists on evenings and weekends.

A great place to pick up souvenirs or sit down at an outdoor café, Arbat Street also offers a chance to visit the former home of poet Alexander Pushkin and the café both Anton Chekhov and Leo Tolstoy used to visit.

VDNKh All-Russian Exhibition Centre and the Friendship of the Peoples Fountain

Although it was originally designed as a general-purpose trade show venue, this park complex now houses amusement rides , ice rinks , and a number of galleries and other attractions for all ages.

The park's most famous landmarks are the Moskvarium, a marine biology center home to over 8000 species of marine animals, the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, and a shopping center selling traditional products from former Soviet countries.

There's even a film museum showing Soviet cartoons or even a full-length film (for an extra fee) and an education center offering masterclasses on everything from becoming a barista to video montage (call or write in advance to find out which ones are English-friendly).

Soviet-era pavilions, sculptures, and fountains abound here as well, including the famous Friendship of the Peoples Fountain, which features statues of women dressed in costumes from different former Soviet countries.

Main entrance gate to Gorky Park

Named after the famous Russian writer Maxim Gorky (who was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature five times but never won it) and sitting right across the Moskva River, Gorky Park covers 120 hectares of beautiful ponds and green spaces.

Popular with both locals and tourists, the park offers a variety of things to enjoy-from sunbeds, hammocks, and drinking fountains to free yoga classes and children's playgrounds. There's free Wi-Fi and sockets for charging your phone, as well as many food stands and plenty of wild animals, including deer, rabbits, and pheasants.

Visitors can rent paddle boats and bicycles to explore the park-and from May to October, there is also an open-air movie theater, as well as scheduled presentations by street performers, musicians, and artists. Gorky Park attracts the young and old, so don't be surprised to see a mix of people exercising, playing chess, and sunbathing.

Trip of a Lifetime

We don't know about you, but we could use a vacation. This year especially. Just imagine yourself sunning on a beach somewhere, drink in hand, watching the waves roll in. Or maybe your style is more adventurous, with outings to cultural sites, restaurants, and markets. Either way, we're guessing your style isn't the same at this Adult Tacky Traveler Costume, which is what makes it so much fun! In it, you can channel those vacay vibes with hilarious humor.

So go ahead and set up your Halloween party to match the style of this uncool costume — blend up a pitcher of daiquiris, set out beach chairs for your guests, light a few tiki torches, and require socks and sandals — it's your party, and you'll cry (laughing) if you want to. Now, which way to the buffet?

Design & Details

This is a clever jumpsuit, designed to look like a tank top, shorts, and button-down shirt. Talk about an easy travel piece! The white tank says "Which Way to the Buffet?" and the oversized shorts pair perfectly with the shirt's bold floral print. For footwear, we suggest the aforementioned winning combo of socks and sandals, or perfectly polished athletic shoes with tube socks. Add a straw hat and the accessories of your choice — sunglasses, tiki glasses, cameras, and passport pouches are all great picks.

Happy Traveler

Ah, now wasn't that vacation simply perfect? Who cares who you offended along the way by talking too loudly in English or ordering a burger and fries everywhere you went? That tacky trip was just what you needed to unwind. Don't forget to make your friends look at all 332 of your photos when you get back!

Costume at the Turn of the Century 1990-2015 , an exhibit of international costume design, at the A. A. Bakhrushin State Central Theatre Museum in Moscow, Russia, is scheduled to wrap up September 10.

The entire exhibition, along with additional materials selected by the country curators, should be available this fall at www.worldcostumedesign.com .

A.A. Bakhrushin Museum Director Dmitri Rodenov and his staff transformed the two floors of the museum and the adjoining carriage house to accommodate the more than 1,500 pieces of work on display. Vasilina Ovchinnikova designed the display to focus on the large format printed images accented by digital screens and actual costumes. The curatorial team selected 300 designers from 31 counties. The exhibition was such a success, its run was extended twice.

Prince Nikita Lobanov-Rostovsky, legendary art collector of the theatre Avant-Guard, left an entry in the guest book at the Theatre Museum, "Bravo to you for taking the initiative to create this exhibition. The catalog will be an even more significant achievement and will provide an opportunity to get acquainted with the works of many present-day artists of the theatre at the turn of the century.”

For designers present at the June 29 opening ceremony (coinciding with Prague Quadrennial 2015), the museum staff organized a cultural program in Moscow and St. Petersburg including a special showing of the extensive collection of set and costume renderings for the 1917 production of Mikhail Lermontov’s Masquerade . The collection from the performance, directed by Vsevolod Meyerhold at the Aleksandrinsky Theatre in Petrograd and designed by Alekxandr Golovin, had over 600 costumes and 25 sets. A visit to Mr. Meyerhold’s apartment provided even more examples from this extraordinary production. During a tour of the Stanislavsky Music Theatre, participants glimpsed its sizeable paint studio, extensive costume storage, and multiple construction rooms.

A second opening ceremony was held on June 29 for those designers who came after attending the Prague Quadrennial. Participating designers from countries around the world, including USA, Japan, Poland, Bulgaria, UK, Italy, Australia, Uzbekistan, Netherlands, Taiwan, Brazil, Mexico, Spain, Venezuela, Greece, Canada, Serbia, Denmark, Belgium, China, and Ukraine, were in attendance

Visitors saw the Moscow Art Theatre School’s year-end student projects for scenography and costume design and technology, and gathered Russian designers for a reception. Dmitry Krimov’s production of Tarabumbia was a highlight, with a cast of over 50 actors to portray a continuous parade and an epic performance visualizing a mashup of the convergence of Russian history with the plays of Chekhov. In St. Petersburg, designers toured the Peterhoff, Peter the Great’s summer palace, the backstage of Marinsky Theatre, and the Hermitage Museum in addition to viewing performances of Swan Lake and La Traviata .

10. Pushkin Museum

Pushkin Museum

Despite its name, the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts actually has no connection at all to the famous poet other than that it was named in his honor after his death. Sculptures, graphic art, paintings and more can be found in its beautiful galleries; various sections look at themes and epochs such as the Renaissance, the Dutch Golden Age, and Byzantine art.

Pop-up exhibitions and festivals can be found from time to time in the park itself and there is an open-air theatre and numerous eateries alongside a plethora of leisure activities.

Whether it’s cycling, table tennis or yoga that you are after or beach volleyball and rowing, Gorky Park certainly has it. In winter, there is a huge ice rink for visitors to enjoy.

4. Bolshoi Theatre

Bolshoi Theatre

The Bolshoi Theatre is the main theater in the country. The amazing opera and ballet performances it has put on over the centuries go a long way in explaining Russia’s rich history of performing arts.

While the Bolshoi Ballet Company was established in 1776, the theater itself was opened in 1825. The glittering, six-tier auditorium is lavishly and decadently decorated; it is a fitting setting for the world-class performances that take place on its stage.

Spending a night watching a performance of such classics as The Nutcracker or Swan Lake at the Bolshoi Theatre is sure to be a memorable experience and the beauty all around you only adds to the sense of occasion.

3. Moscow Kremlin

Moscow Kremlin

This famously fortified complex is remarkably home to five palaces and four cathedrals and is the historic, political and spiritual center of the city. The Kremlin serves as the residence for the country’s president. It has been used as a fort, and this fact is made clear by its sheer size. The Kremlin’s outer walls were built in the late 1400s.

Under Ivan III, better known as Ivan the Great, the Kremlin became the center of a unified Russian state, and was extensively remodeled. Three of the Kremlin’s cathedrals date to his reign that lasted from 1462-1505. The Deposition Church and the Palace of Facets were also constructed during this time. The Ivan the Great Bell Tower was built in 1508. It is the tallest tower at the Kremlin with a height of 266 feet (81 meters).

Joseph Stalin removed many of the relics from the tsarist regimes. However, the Tsar Bell, the world’s largest bell, and the Tsar Cannon, the largest bombard by caliber in the world, are among the remaining items from that era. The Kremlin Armory is one of Moscow’s oldest museums as it was established more than 200 years ago. Its diamond collection is impressive.

The Kremlin’s gardens – Taynitsky, Grand Kremlin Public and Alexander – are beautiful. The Kremlin has also served as the religious center of the country, and there is a tremendous number of preserved churches and cathedrals here. The collections contained within the museums include more than 60,000 historical, cultural and artistic monuments. Those who enjoy the performing arts will want to consider attending a ballet or concert at the State Kremlin Palace. Completed in 1961, it is the only modern building in the Kremlin.

2. Red Square

Red Square

Lying at the heart of Moscow, Red Square is the most important and impressive square in the city. It is one of the most popular tourist attractions due to its wealth of historical sights and cultural landmarks.

Drenched in history, the huge square is home to incredible sights such as the Kremlin, St. Basil’s Cathedral and Lenin’s Mausoleum, among others. Consequently, it is not to be missed when in Moscow as it really is home to the city’s most stunning monuments.

It is here that many important moments in Russian history took place; the former marketplace has hosted everything from Tsar’s coronations and public ceremonies to rock concerts and Soviet military parades. Wandering around the massive square is a humbling experience and undoubtedly one of the highlights the city has to offer.

1. Saint Basil’s Cathedral

Saint Basil's Cathedral

Located in the impressive Red Square, St. Basil’s Cathedral is gorgeous; its delightful spires appear as if out of a fairytale. The most recognizable building in the country, the cathedral is very much a symbol of Russia. No visit to Moscow is complete without having taken in its unique and distinctive features.

Ivan the Terrible ordered the cathedral’s construction in the mid-16th century, and legend holds that Ivan put out the architect’s eyes so that he would be unable to build another cathedral more glorious than St. Basil’s. Designed to resemble the shape of a bonfire in full flame, the architecture is not only unique to the period in which it was built but to any subsequent period. For various reasons, both Napoleon and Stalin wanted to destroy the cathedral but fortunately did not succeed.

Known for its various colors, shapes and geometric patterns, St. Basil’s Cathedral houses nine different chapels that are all connected by a winding labyrinth of corridors and stairways. On the lower floor, St. Basil’s Chapel contains a silver casket bearing the body of St. Basil the Blessed.

Throughout the cathedral are many beautiful murals, frescoes, wooden icons and other art works and artifacts. Outside the cathedral is a lovely garden with the bronze Monument to Minin and Pozharsky, who rallied an all-volunteer Russian army against Polish invaders during a period of the late 16th century known as the Times of Troubles.

OT Travel Itinerary: Your Guide To Spending 4 Days In Almaty, Kazakhstan

4-Day Almaty Itinerary

A recent survey from June 2023 to May 2024 found that Indian travellers are showing a growing interest in journeying to emerging hotspots like Azerbaijan and Bhutan. One of the places which caught users’ interest was Almaty in Kazakhstan. Formerly known as Alma-Ata, it is the country’s largest city and is located in the mountainous area of southern Kazakhstan in the foothills of the Trans-Ili Alatau. The former Silk Route stop is the beating heart and soul of Kazakh classical and pop culture, with a contemporary feel that puts it more in league with its European brethren. Find out what makes Almaty unique and worth your visit with this four-day itinerary.

The Central State Museum of Kazakhstan was established in 1931

Start your trip with a visit to the Central State Museum of Kazakhstan , one of the largest museums in Central Asia. Established in 1931, the museum houses the most significant collection of Kazakh historical, archaeological, and modern cultural and political artefacts, totalling an astonishing 300,000 pieces. You will come across mammoth skeletons, national costumes and horse harnesses, guns from World War II, bowls of Chinese porcelain from the 12 th century, a handwritten Quran written in 1643, and more such fascinating items here.

The Ascension Cathedral is included in the list of monuments of Kazakhstan which are of republican significance

Spend some time at the 28 Panfilov Guardsmen Park which is named after the soldiers of an Alma-Ata Infantry unit who died while defending Moscow from the German invasion during World War II . An eternal flame commemorating the fallen of the war and the Eastern Front burns in front of a giant black monument of soldiers from 15 Soviet Republics. During the day, you can ride ponies, feed pigeons and stroll along the coniferous alleys and mysterious shady pathways.

Next, check out the nearby Ascension Cathedral, a building falsely believed to have been constructed without a single nail. The cathedral was built in 1907 and was only used for its intended purpose during the first 20 years of its life. In 1929 it came under the control of the anti-religious Soviet power who used the building for public purposes, like sending out radio broadcasts from the bell tower. The temple was finally returned to the ownership of the Russian Orthodox Church in 1995. Today, the building is included in the list of monuments of Kazakhstan which are of republican significance.

The lavish interiors of the Arasan Bathhouse

Ease the day’s adventures with a refreshing dip in the Arasan Bathhouse. More than just a sauna complex, the place is an important part of the history of Almaty and since 1984 has been a monument of national importance. The complex is designed to serve up to 2,500 people per day. While the façade of the bathhouse looks quite modest, the same cannot be said about the interior of the building. There are three types of baths which can be found here: Russian, Finnish and Turkish. Fans of large groups can bathe in the common rooms while those who wish to sit in a small group can rent rooms.

The Green Bazaar is a two-storey market which has been in business since 1875

Visit the bustling Green Bazaar, a two-storey market which has been in business since 1875. Vendors sell a wide array of Kazakh delights, ranging from fizzy, alcoholic milk to horse sausage. Inside, you will find rows of meticulously arranged baskets of kurt , smooth balls of a dry, salty cheese made from fermented mare’s or sheep’s milk. Dried apricots, raisins, figs, and other fruit and nuts lie like little jewels on trays, next to fresh fruit being pressed on hand-cranked juicers. The smell of freshly cut flowers, spices and produce lingers as one walks through the bazaar. From salty camel’s milk to fish roe to horseradish condiments, customers are encouraged to have a taste as they peruse the stalls. If you’re still peckish after tasting the samples, stop over for tea and noodles at one of the food stalls lining the perimeter.

Kok Tobe Park is located on the peak of the Kok Tobe mountain (1,100m above sea level)

The wondrous architecture of the Palace of the Republic should be next on your itinerary. One of the largest concert halls in Kazakhstan, the building has been used for various events of urban and republican significance like party plenums and trade union meetings. At the same time, the Palace of the Republic has been a popular stage venue for almost 50 years. Check out the schedule of events for the day at the reception.

Follow this up with a visit to Kok Tobe Park, a popular place for romantic dates and walks. It is located on the peak of the Kok Tobe mountain at an altitude of 1,100m above sea level. From the top of the mountain, you can see not only city landscapes but also breathtaking panoramas of the foothills of the Trans-Ili Alatau. The TV tower here is one of the tallest in the world at 371m. Unfortunately, the entrance to it is closed to tourists so you can only admire it from the side. The theme park at the site features a mini-zoo, rides, a tribute to The Beatles, a mirror maze, a rope park and a “Fast Coaster” sled. Take a ride on the Ferris wheel and admire Almaty from on high.

A swan swims in a pond at the Botanical Garden

Hear the silence of the wild with a trip to the Botanical Garden in the evening. Located on Timiryazev Street, the 108 hectares of real pine groves, spruce forests, oak and birch avenues, lilac thickets, and other plants from around the world are home to squirrels, pheasants and blue-headed birds. An experienced guide will take you on a tour of the garden, which is arranged according to botanical and geographical principles. You will learn a lot about the flora of Kazakhstan, Russia, Crimea and the Caucasus. Enjoy the interiors of the greenhouse where the delicate beauty of more than 1,000 species of heat-loving tropical plants are on display. You can have a picnic at the garden and breathe the fresh air as the night deepens.

Morning And Afternoon

Big Almaty Lake in the summer

Time for a day trip to the Big Almaty Lake and the Big Almaty Peak. The reservoir is located near the state border of Kyrgyzstan and is hidden in a mountainous area with landscapes of indescribable beauty, the aroma of fragrant herbs and the freshness of snow-capped peaks of the Trans-Ili Alatau. One of the mysterious features of the lake is its ever-changing colour, which ranges from an azure blue to a rich emerald. The background of snow-white mountain peaks and centuries-old majestic pines accompanied by the ringing natural silence and brilliance of the sun’s rays on the water's surface will leave an unforgettable impression on you.

The lake lies on the way to the Big Almaty Peak on the Northern Tian-Shan slope. On a clear day, it is easily visible from the city and is shaped similarly to a pyramid. Hiking to the 3,680m summit may not be easy but it does not require special preparation and equipment—just pack some good shoes and you will be on your way. The temperature drop in this area can be swift, with 30°C in the afternoon turning to a frigid -10°C in the evening. When you reach the 3,400m mark, stop to take in the view of the Zailiysky Alatau range.

Sunkar Farm is a place that looks after endangered falcons

Stop by Sunkar Farm, a place that looks after endangered falcons. So far, more than 850 falcons have been bred and released from the facility. It keeps several species of falcons, golden eagles, black vultures and eagle owls but what sets the farm apart from others like it in the world is its collection of purebred falcons. Take part in a spectacular bird show where the feathered creatures engage in various ways of hunting small game under the guidance of a falconer. You can also choose to stay nearby for the night instead of going back to Almaty.

The ice skating rink of Medeu

On your final day in Almaty, head to the Medeu complex located at an altitude of 1,691m above sea level. With beautiful views of the tops of the Zailiysky Alatau mountains, clean air and soft sunlight, it’s no wonder that residents come here frequently. The place is probably most well-known for its ice skating rink which has been operating since 1972. The rink regularly hosts speed skating, ice hockey and figure skating competitions. South of the ice skating rink is the Medeu Dam which can be accessed by climbing 842 steps. Not everyone can climb them in one go but the fascinating view from the dam to the ice skating rink is worth the effort.

While you're here, take the cable car to the Shymbulak Ski Resort where you can drink coffee at the top of the world. You will find snow here even in 30°C summer heat. In summer, the average air temperature is a remarkable 20°C while in winter it’s around -7°C. During the off-season from May to October, the resort offers extreme sports activities for visitors such as buggy rides, cycling down the mountain, a rope park and paragliding adventures. There are cafés and restaurants where you can eat a leisurely meal and an observation deck with powerful binoculars that rotate 360°. For those who want to enjoy the mountain silence and admire the snowy slopes, the resort also has high-class hotels.

Beshbarmak is the national dish of Kazakhstan

Head back to the city and enjoy a nice dinner of Kazakh food at Sandyq, Qaimaq or the Abay Restaurant. The majority of Kazakh cuisine is composed of meat dishes from horses, camels, cows and sheep. Horse and camel meat are the two main types of festive meats while sheep and cow meat are eaten day-to-day. Feast on beshbarmark , kazy , shelpek , kespe , kuurdak and manti during your stay in Almaty.

How To Reach Almaty

There are direct flights from New Delhi to Almaty International Airport (ALA).
